David Gerber, MD, MHSc, FRCS(C), is one of Toronto's most prominent labiaplasty (labia reduction surgery) surgeons. Dr David Gerber’s Education A graduate of the University of Stellenbosch, Dr. David Gerber holds a medical degree. After finishing his internship in Cape Town, he worked as a doctor in a Ciskei hospital specializing in pregnancy, obstetrics, and gynecology (an underprivileged region). At the University of British Columbia, he completed his training in Obstetrics and Gynecology. He worked as an Incontinence Surgeon in Toronto, Canada, after completing his residency. This Canadian gynecologist graduated from the University of Toronto in 2004 with a Master's degree in Health Sciences in Bioethics. During his time in Toronto, he studied at Sunnybrook and Women’s College Health Science Centre and focused on minimally invasive surgery, colposcopic techniques, and emergency gynecology. He was particularly interested in these subjects. Dr David Gerber’s Career Before becoming a gynecologist in 1997, he practiced family medicine in rural Manitoba and Alberta for four years. With over 15 years of experience in gynecologic surgery, he has extensive experience with minimally invasive procedures. He has also developed a micro-surgical procedure for labia reduction surgery, which he has been providing for many years, along with precancerous vulva, vagina, and cervix conditions.   What it Labia Reduction Surgery The purpose of labia reduction surgery is to reduce the size of the labia minora (inner labia). Women usually undergo this procedure to repair damaged or torn "labia majoras" (outer labia) which are too large, torn, or stretched. Asymmetry can also be corrected in some cases. A variety of labia reduction techniques can be performed in the operating room. Asymmetrical labia minora, scarring, and excess skin can all be addressed using different techniques. Lasers are used in some techniques, while stitches, sutures, and cuts are used in others. Under local anesthesia, liposuction is a minimally invasive procedure that reduces the size of the lips. The procedure typically takes less than one hour to complete, and most women can be home the same day.
