About | A native of Longview, Texas, Travis Herberger completed his high school education there. He finds watercolor to be the ideal medium for his work. There’s an elusiveness and unpredictableness about it. Travis has been painting for more than 15 years, covering a wide variety of subjects in an ever-evolving style which is always colorful and vibrant. His work has been seen in galleries and juried shows around the Texas area. He has also had work in juried exhibits in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York. The watercolors Travis Herberger creates reflect the surroundings in which he lives. Herberger is fascinated by the Texas Gulf Coast. The figures are also important to him in his paintings because they are the ones who make a place what it is. Travis Herberger prefers urban settings with lots of vibrant colors and people bustling around. In spite of the fact that he often rearranges elements for composition’s sake, he rarely eliminates elements simply to make a “pretty” picture. Travis believes that artwork should be more than just representation: his paintings express his feelings about the world he views. Through various media he explores the color, shape, and emotion that a scene or model brings about. Color play, expression, movement, and the wonder of creation are all part of his work. Travis Herberger is influenced by his own spirituality and by the work of artists he admires. He hopes you will share in his sense of wonder at the world and all of its beauty. Travis’ figurative work is often done directly from the model, which allows his to experience a direct connection with the subject. This connection and the emotional attachment that results can be experienced in line and color — he hopes you will share my experience and my vision. His landscape work comes from places he has been or paintings done outdoors. When working indoors in his studio the works are done from his photographs and memories of places he has traveled. Travis Herberger loves being in nature and portraying that love through his paintings. As much as he loves painting, he also enjoys drawing. According to him, they go hand in hand. In addition to sketching on location for his paintings, Travis Herberger also works from photographs. During the last five years, he has also been drawing live models with a local sketch group. In Travis Herberger’s paintings, travel plays an important role. As a child, he spent quite a bit of time in the Caribbean, and his travel bug has taken him to Europe, South and Central America, and Africa. Travel has given him a new perspective on the world. His watercolors have been featured on posters, marketing materials, magazine covers, and apparel over the last few years. Travis is currently working in two different subjects- landscape and figurative. His landscape work is either plein air or from photos he takes on his travels and in his home area. They are usually watercolor on paper or acrylic on canvas and range in size from 11x14in to over 24×30 in. Herberger’s figurative work is usually drawn directly from life models and is mostly watercolor and pencil or charcoal and watercolor over gessoed paper. A few of his works may use collage with the figure or pastel. He looks for the mood in all his subjects. The landscapes are a way to express his love of being in nature. Travis Herberger is an active member of many local and national arts organizations and has served on the board of the Texas Watercolor Society for many years. |
